How to Build a Solid Shed Base: A Quick Guide
Build It Right from the Ground Up with This Handy Guide
A solid shed base is the unsung hero of any garden shed. It keeps everything stable, dry, and standing strong for years to come. Whether you’re building a new shed or replacing an old one, this guide will walk you through the essentials of creating a reliable foundation.
Do You Have a Concrete or Paved Area?
For the strongest and longest‑lasting foundation, a concrete or paved base is always the best starting point. A paved or slab foundation is particularly beneficial because it offers exceptional stability while improving airflow and drainage beneath your shed. Unlike bare soil or wooden bearers placed directly on the ground, a slab base creates a flat, durable surface that prevents sinking, shifting, and moisture build‑up over time.
This not only protects the timber structure but also helps extend the lifespan of your floorboards and reduces the risk of damp, rot, or warping. If you want a dependable base that’s quick to install and built to last, paving slabs are one of the most reliable options for supporting a timber shed.

Don’t Have a Concrete or Paved Area? No Problem!
A timber shed base is a highly cost‑effective and practical solution when you don’t have an existing concrete or paved area to build on. Our custom timber bases are designed to fit every shed size we offer, whether it’s a Summerhouse, Garden Shed, Garden Tidy, Bike Shed, or Potting Shed.
If your garden building needs to sit on grass, bark, or even at the far end of your garden, our tailor‑made bases provide a stable, secure foundation without the expense or disruption of laying hardstanding. Strong, durable, and easy to install, they ensure your shed remains level and protected while keeping your overall project affordable.
How to Prepare & Build a Timber Shed Base
- Location: Pick a level spot with good drainage, away from trees, and make sure you can access all sides for future maintenance.
- Check the Area: Clear debris, check for drainage issues, and level the ground.
- Equipment: You’ll need a shovel, rake, ground tamper, tape measure, spirit level, pegs or builder’s line, and protective clothing.
- Level the Ground: Use a shovel, rake, and ground tamper to get a flat surface. We recommend with adding a weed membrane underneath to prevent vegetation and grass growth. Adding gravel helps drainage and stability.
- Assemble the Base: Follow the instructions and secure the frame with a hammer.
